Showcasing My Technical Writing Skills
Explore projects that demonstrate my ability to write, edit, and design digital instructions that are clear, concise, and visually accessible. Each piece reflects how I’ve developed practical communication skills through real-world coursework in technical writing.
What inspired this instructional project?
This project was designed to demonstrate my ability to create clear, user-friendly digital instructions. I chose to make a short tutorial on scheduling a Zoom meeting because it’s a task many users perform, yet often overlook key features that improve efficiency.
How did I plan and organize my video?
Before recording, I wrote a detailed script and storyboard to plan the visuals, narration, and pacing. This pre-production step ensured that my final video followed minimalist design principles, focusing only on essential actions and keeping the instructions short, accessible, and easy to follow.
What technical tools and skills did I use?
I created the video using Camtasia for recording and editing, and Microsoft Word for scripting. These tools helped me combine writing, design, and multimedia production, key digital literacies for today’s technical communicators.
What challenges did I encounter?
Timing the narration with the visuals was one of the biggest challenges. I had to revise my script several times to fit within the 150-second limit while still keeping the instructions complete. This taught me how to adapt technical content for different media formats.
What did I learn from this experience?
This project taught me how to think visually as a technical writer. I learned that clarity isn’t just about the words; it’s also about pacing, visuals, and usability. The process reinforced how digital literacy and thoughtful design enhance audience understanding.
How does this project represent my skills as a technical communicator?
This instructional video and its storyboard reflect my ability to combine written planning with visual execution. It demonstrates my attention to clarity, tone, and audience needs—skills that apply to all areas of professional technical communication.
